Singapore, February 21, 2025 – The Faculty of Communication Science of Tarumanagara University and the Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM) Untar conducted a community service activity at Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Singapore, on February 20-21, 2025. This event aimed to introduce Indonesian culture through a batik-making activity involving international students.
The event was opened by the Head of LPPM Untar, Dr. Hetty Karunia Tunjungsari, S.E., M.Si., who emphasized the importance of introducing Indonesia’s rich culture to the world. Also present at the event was the Chairman of the Tarumanagara Foundation Board, Prof. Dr. Ariawan Gunadi, S.H., M.H., who appreciated this initiative as a concrete step in cultural diplomacy.
In this activity, two lecturers from Fikom Untar, Dr. Sinta Paramita, S.I.P., M.A., and Dr. Wulan Purnama Sari, S.I.Kom., M.A., were the main speakers. They provided in-depth insights into batik as one of Indonesia’s cultural heritages, carrying deep philosophical and historical values. The international students attending the event were given the opportunity to learn basic batik-making techniques and understand the motifs and meanings embedded in them.
According to Dr. Sinta Paramita, batik is not just a patterned fabric but also a form of cultural communication that reflects Indonesia’s national identity. “Through batik, we can convey stories and life values that have been passed down through generations,” she said. Meanwhile, Dr. Wulan Purnama Sari added that batik-making can be an effective means of introducing Indonesia’s cultural diversity to the international community.
The enthusiasm of the international students was evident throughout the activity. They not only learned about batik but also gained hands-on experience in creating traditional Indonesian batik motifs. One participant from Ngee Ann Polytechnic expressed admiration for the batik-making process, which requires precision and patience.
This event is expected to strengthen academic relations between Untar and Ngee Ann Polytechnic while serving as a starting point for further collaboration in education and culture. Fikom Untar and LPPM Untar remain committed to bringing Indonesian culture to the international stage through various academic and community service activities. (LI)
