Gen Z’s Role in Building the Future, Drivers of Influence to Knit Sustainability

Jakarta, August 24, 2024 – Perhumas Muda Jakarta Raya (PMJR) held the “Reconciliation Public Relations (Recon PR) 2024” activity as part of the Road to World Public Relations Forum (WPRF) series. This event will take place with the theme “Catalysts of Change; Gen Z: The Power of Youth”.

Quality education is an important foundation for sustainable development in Indonesia. As a catalyst for change, education plays a crucial role in improving the quality of human life, preserving the environment, and promoting the welfare of the nation as a whole. Sustainable Development Goal (SDGs) number 4 emphasizes the importance of ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education, as well as increasing lifelong learning opportunities for all levels of society.

Quality education is not only the foundation for a bright future, but also the main key to creating sustainable development in Indonesia. In its role as a catalyst for change, education contributes directly to improving the quality of life, preserving the environment, and the welfare of the nation.

Referring to Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) number 4, inclusive and equitable education is a priority to ensure that every individual in Indonesia has equal access to lifelong learning and development. This is important to form a generation that is ready to face global challenges and bring positive change.

The event was opened by Dr.rer.nat. Agustina Dwi Retno Nurcahyanti, S.Si., M.Si., M.Sc as University Secretary of Unika Atma Jaya, Boy Kelana Soebroto as Chairperson of PERHUMAS, Hanief Enriansyah as Chairperson of PERHUMAS Muda Jakarta Raya and Andi Raviali as Chairperson of the Recon PR 2024. Hopefully, this can have an impact on their performance and business development in the era of rapid technological development.

Boy Kelana, as the chairman of Perhumas Indonesia in his speech at Recon PR 2024, conveyed the importance of the role of youth as agents of change through the theme “Catalysts of Change: The Power of Youth”. He emphasized that the younger generation, especially Gen Z who have gone through various challenges, have great potential to build a better future, both in Indonesia and in the world.

The theme “Catalysts of Change: The Power of Youth” was chosen to underline the critical contribution of youth to sustainability issues, including the environment, climate change, good governance, and inclusion. This event was also part of the World Public Relations Forum (WPRF) in Bali, and Boy invited all participants to actively discuss in order to create positive change.

Amidst the challenges of accessibility and quality of education, Indonesia continues to strive to realize an inclusive and equitable education system. Various initiatives have been launched to bridge the gap, including scholarship programs such as Merdeka Belajar, Indonesia Pintar, and scholarships from the private sector. In addition, technological developments have opened up new opportunities through online learning platforms that provide access to free and quality education.

Recon PR 2024 aims to actualize the role of the younger generation in sustainable development in accordance with the seventeen pillars of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This event will be held offline with a series of activities, including talk shows that raise important topics related to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG).

This year, Recon PR carries the theme “Catalyst of Change; Gen Z: The Power of Youth”. This theme highlights the vital role of Generation Z in driving positive change through Public Relations (PR) and supporting ESG principles. This event is in collaboration with Atma Jaya Catholic University Jakarta to implement the PERHUMAS Muda Jakarta work program at Atma Jaya Catholic University Jakarta on Saturday, August 24, 2024 at 12.30 – 16.00 WIB.

Maria Advenita Gita Elmada, Lecturer of Communication for Sustainable Development at Multimedia Nusantara University, in the first session of the talk show added, “We have a duty to empower others too so that they can communicate and achieve common goals. That is our superpower, the ability to communicate to make others also speak and act in achieving SDGs.”

Sari Soegondo, General Chairperson of the Association of Public Relations Companies (APPRI), stated, “SDGs is not just a term or slogan, but a development framework that must be integrated into national development. We must remember that natural resources are increasingly scarce, and sustainable development is a must for the future.”

Alryan M. Irawan, Sustainability Consultant, in the second session of the talk show, added, “Education must also be directed at developing innovations related to SDGs so that they can be implemented properly. SDGs are not just a framework or lifestyle, but also the hopes and dreams of future generations.”

Kenny Ivanzaky Augusta, Partner Development Manager at Google, emphasized the importance of daring to try and take the initiative, “You don’t have to be great to start but you have to start to be great. When I was in college, a friend said, ‘why do an internship while studying, later after graduating so your GPA is high’. The reality is not like that. So you have to start, do trial and error.”

Ferdinand Adi Nugroho, Marketing and Communications Specialist at Accenture, who is an alumni of Unika Atma Jaya, also emphasized the importance of taking every opportunity available, “If we have the opportunity, take it. If not, we look for it. Because opportunities will not come twice, just do your best.”

In facing global challenges, higher education plays an important role in preparing a competitive young generation, through relevant curriculum and the development of critical and innovative skills. No less important, improving the quality of teaching staff through professional development programs and the use of technology in teaching methods is also a priority.

Also attending this event were Fikom Untar students Alicia Virlinda and Mayshia Yonathan. Virlinda shared how this activity inspired her. “Participating in the Recon PR Road to WPRF Pemuda 2024 Activity provided an eye-opening and inspiring experience for me who is interested in PR (Public Relations). This event gave me a warm welcome as a media partner of Fikom Untar. Because I met again with the PMJR committee, who had previously worked together in the Humas’ Day PRO Fikom Untar event,” said Virlinda.

Virlinda also learned how Gen Z plays an important role, “Through the talk show filled with great speakers, I learned how Gen Z can be a real driver of change in the world of PR. The ideas presented made me even more convinced that the younger generation has great power to bring innovation and positive impact. The event not only provided new insights, but also provided an opportunity to network with professionals, other colleagues from Perhumas Indonesia, and PMJR,” she said.

Recon PR 2024 offers a great opportunity for the younger generation to collaborate, innovate, and deepen their understanding of the importance of meaningful narratives in supporting ESG principles. This event is also a personal branding event for Perhumas Muda and introduces the WPRF series to students. It is hoped that this event can increase the awareness and knowledge of the younger generation about the importance of meaningful narratives in supporting ESG principles and building a greener future.
